Insulin storage

Does your insulin really need the fridge?

Usually not. For most insulins, a pen in use can stay unrefrigerated for up to 4 weeks, as long as it stays below 30 °C.

In use below 30 °C, usually 4 weeks
Unopened in the fridge, 2 to 8 °C

What applies to your pen?

Pick your pen. We show you what the manufacturer states in the official product information.

What actually matters

In everyday life the problem is not missing cooling. It is these four things.

Heat

Hot car, window sill, radiator. Keep your pen away from all of them.

Direct sunlight

Sunlight can damage insulin. Do not leave your pen lying out in the open.

Knocks and drops

A drop can damage the pen or the cartridge. Loose in a bag is a risk.

Freezing

Frozen insulin is no longer usable. When flying, keep it in your hand luggage, never in the hold.

Quick answers

What about spare pens I am not using yet?

Unopened pens belong in the fridge (2 to 8 °C). The below 30 °C rule only applies once you start using a pen.

Can I still keep my pen in use in the fridge?

That depends on the insulin, you can see it in the pen check above. Unopened insulin should always be kept in the fridge though. To keep it sorted and safe there, we made the DIAVY fridge pen holder.

And if it is warmer than 30 °C outside?

Then move your pen somewhere cooler. For hot days and for travelling, there is our DIAVY cooling bag. Important: insulin should never touch the ice pack directly.
